That road is usually in good condition. Like most rural roads in Mexico
it has a lot of speedbumps (topes). It's only marginally more interesting
than the toll road. It bypasses many of the towns along the way. With a car
I would urge you to visit Valladolid and the ruins of Ek Balam. Uxmal and
some of the other nearby temples are also easily within your reach. Even
though much of it is thinly paved and suffers from a lot of potholes I also
like the loop from Valladolid down to Coba and back to the coast at Tulum.
There's a lot to see and do in that area and never enough time.
