I have traveled through much of Latin America, and have rented cars in
Mexico and Costa Rica. As someone has already pointed out, the local cops
can be a problem, but I think it's overstated. I was only ever pulled over
once, and after checking my papers, the cop waved me on. Keep your speed
well within the speed limits and your chances of being pulled over are slim.
You happen to be driving in an area heavily frequented by foreign tourists,
so it's not like you would be some kind of isolated target for a
money-hungry cop. The main roads in the Yucatan are some of the best in all
of Latin America, and safety-wise, you'll be fine. I travel there with my
wife and kids and so do millions of others. Relax. The Yucatan,
particularly, is not bandito country. Tourism is the financial engine of
the region, and the majority of the cops are there to protect you and to
keep the bad guys out.
