I am planning to visit Kuelap this month or May (2007). I know it is
nearing the end of the rainy season, so would it be better to wait
until May? (If that makes any difference.) I am taking an omnibus from
Lima to Chiclayo, but I am not sure about the rest of the way. People
I know have gone to Kuelap a couple of years ago when it was fairly
new to tourism and they ended up hiking for 2 days with camping gear
and there were no stores or restaurants. Maybe it has changed? Are
there any hostals in Tingo or any other small town near Kuelap? I
heard it is an 8 hour hike, otherwise collective taxi at 25 soles to
get to the fortress. I also heard about the 3rd highest waterfall in
the world, which is a definate must do for me. I have been to several
of the jungles of Peru (Tingo Maria, Chanchamayo, Tarapoto), but am
not sure about what clothes to bring for the climate of Amazonas. Are
there any ponds or rivers to bathe in? Is insect repellant necessary?
Should I bring camping gear or will there be lodging? How about a
raincoat? I am asking because I want to pack as light as possible so
that hiking isn=B4t so hard on the spine. Thanks so much for any
information that you can share.
