I have to go with Klaus on this one - I don't think renting a car in
Peru is such a hot idea if you have never been there. Or have you?
My wife is from Peru, I'm from the USA (Delaware), and I drove us from
La Oroya to Huancayo late one night. Long story as to why. Then
again, who would want to stay in La Oroya?
Anyway, while the roads outside of big cities like Lima and even
Trujillo are relatively tranquil (but not a country drive mind you), I
would suggest taking the bus to the different cities and then hiring
out taxis to get you around town and place to see. They are
relatively cheap and plentiful. They will take you to pretty much
anywhere you want to go.
If you REALLY insist on doing this, I know you can rent cars, but the
only way to do it without knowing someone in Peru (or speaking
excellent spanish) is to go through one of the major companies online.
Driving in the Andes is hazardous, especially if you've never been
there before. A little intimidating also. I've been back and forth
between Lima and Huancayo a good bit, and late at night there is less
traffic, so I wasn't too worried. Those dang trucks and buses worry
me a lot. Just remember to drive VERY defensively.
Theft is a major issue, though I've never had anything stolen (knock
on wood). Then again, having a Preuvian wife lessens those risks.....
