Mexicans use $ to denote MXN which go at around 11:1 against the USD last I
checked. If the price they quote is infact in USD, they'll often write it as
$100 US or sometimes 100 dll.

I last did the research in 2001 before my first trip and IIRC there was one
line still running, I believe it was from Mexico City to San Miguel de
Allende but it took at least twice as long as the bus and there was only one
departure daily.

So for all intent and purpose, yes, the Mexican passenger rail is a thing of
the past.
