We took an overnight train from Oaxaca to Mexico City in '97 (you pass
close to Teotihuacan).
Perhaps you can fly from Cancun to Oaxaca (which also has plenty to
see).
Even Chichen has its own airfield.
We bussed from Cancun to Oaxaca slowly via Palenque, Campeche, San
Cristobal etc... and it was cheap.
