...you do not want to miss Petra, so paying the extra is probably
worth it.
I remember the Kings Highway had some great views though.
We considered hiring a car to do all of it but ended up bussing to the
Dead Sea, before going to Kerak (Castle)
and Aqaba via Petra.
In Aqaba we teamed up with some ....... Aussies and hired a small 4x4
for the day, to go to Wadi Rum, which was an adventure even if it is
just desert.
And from Aqaba we took a ferry to Nuweiba in Egypt and bussed down to
Cairo via Mt Sinai / Saint Catherine's Monastery and Suez.
In Cairo we did the Pyramids, Museum, Camel market and Heliopolis,
then took an overnight train (1st class) to Aswan.
Took a long daytrip in a cramped minibus to Abu Simbel (worth the
pain).
Bussed back to Cairo via Luxor (hired bicycles to get to temples),
Hurghada (for snorkelling) and Suez.
I could write a blog but when I look at the closely worded stack of
diaries.......
I did scan all the fotos but haven't weeded out the crap, something
else I should do......
As for languages, we got by with English and learnt Arabic numbers for
buses and prices.
Security was not a problem, it was the tour groups that got gunned
down.
Egyptian taxi drivers enjoy the odd scam but if you make a song and
dance about reporting them, they give in.
