The "best" way is a matter of taste. Personally I prefer renting a car
because I can go exactly where I want, when I want. I've gotten very good
service from the Avis agency in Playa del Carmen. OTOH you have a lot of
transportation options in that area. It would be easy to catch a combi
(shuttle van) in Tulum, ride that to Playa and catch a bus to Piste from
there. All you have to do to catch a combi is go to the highway and flag one
down. There are a lot of them in that area. Taxis are also plentiful and
relatively inexpensive.

Day trips are also a matter of tastes and interests. Coba is a short
drive from there. The archaeological site and the nearby lake both have some
interesting wildlife. Tulum is at the entrance to the Sian Ka'an bioreserve,
but it would be easier to take a tour instead of driving yourself. There's a
lot of good snorkeling sites in the area. If you're into the more touristy
stuff you might consider spending some time in Playa del Carmen and Xcaret.
If you don't dive, but would like to see the reefs anyway there's a
submarine over on Cozumel. http://www.atlantisadventures.com/cozumel.cfm
Merida is another option to consider.
