Ha! I covered a sales route in the Upper Midwest in the scorching hot
summer of 1969. When driving on the Interstate through Gary, Indiana
the air was so thick with factory emissions that drivers had to turn on
their vehicle headlights.
The worst part was a perpetual mist of tiny red iron oxide particles
that got into the eyes, ears, nose and throat, and into every corner of
my van. When I checked into my motel at night, I found it had
infiltrated my (closed) suitcase and it left a red scum in the bottom of
the shower stall.
