I've bought a couple of the Ecuadorian panama hats in the mercado at
Merida and another at a hat shop in San Cristobal de las Casas. I can't help
you with Mexico City. For the best quality and selection shop online. The
prices are a higher than what you'll find in Mexico, but they're generally
finished better than much of what you see in Mexico. Most of what I've found
is just the hat, without a hatband. I finish mine with hatbands that I buy
from the Mayan women in San Cristobal, but I would prefer a hatband inside
the hat as well. Most of the shops just give you a piece of ribbon.
