Not much works in the countries south of the US. Even if you made a
reservation you should not assume that it exist. Just recently I was
forced to stay in Costa Rica one day extra due to non-functioning
reservation systems. If critical always buy 1 day in advance,
otherwise just go there early.

The main bus station in Santiago, Chile is great, you can there by the
metro in notime. It is well organized and you can pay by credit card.
Have you looked at the train option?
