Well, I'm from Texas and had a Mexican grandmother and my boyfriend's a
native of Mazatlan, and we have never considered it to be Tex-Mex at all.
We love the food.
In fact, I can never persuade my mazatleco to eat at any Tex Mex
restaurant in Austin where we live as he detests Tex-Mex so much. And we
don't drink, so the margaritas don't influence us, but as you note, to each
his own.

All the best,

Mike
