I would suggest visiting Tulum early in the day. It's a small site and
gets crowded as the day progresses.
Sites to visit all depend on how much time you have and your level of
interest. Between Cancun and Tulum, Xelha is a small site that only gets
lightly visited. It has a couple of small murals that are mildly
interesting. In that general region Coba is a bigger site that gets a lot of
attention. I enjoy it more for the wildlife you can see on the site than the
ruins. The nearby lake has crocodiles.
There are many sites that I prefer to Tulum. Unless you have a lot of
time most of them are outside of the area that it would be practical for you
to visit. Major exceptions are Ek Balam, outside of Valladolid, and Uxmal,
south of Merida, along with some of the other nearby ruins, particularly
Kabah. Most of the major site represent city/states. Tulum on the other hand
was a ceremonial site built late in the Mayan civilization. It has some
excellent artwork, but it was built on a much small scale than the
city/states. It's interesting, but not in the way the bigger sites are.
