Hi, y'all -
It's been years since I've been here and I find myself in an
interesting situation - hope there are enough "real" people among the
spammers and such to give me some advice!
I haven't been able to travel for 5 or 6 years. I'm looking at my
first trip in quite some time, and I'm frankly confused as to where to
go. I've taken 12 trips to western Mexico - mostly Puerto Vallarta,
Guadalajara, Acapulco. I speak good enough Spanish that my family
thinks I'm fluent - I know better, but can get around. I'm now
divorced, and my daughter doesn't wish to travel with me, so I'm
looking at going somewhere alone this Sept/Oct. I had originally
thought to go back to PV, but the family was having a fit over the
carteles, and with the stupid Flu, they're ready to stage an
intervention over the idea of Mexico now. My daughter keeps screaming
Punta Cana at me, but has no idea why she does. Or at least not one
she can articulate.
Here are my requirements, though NONE are cast in stone (except that
I'd rather stay home than go to Cancun - I have SOME taste!)
1) Spanish speaking, some cultural or historical interest
2) Warm, beaches a serious plus
3) Safe (by that I mean for a 50-ish savvy woman alone, also would be
nice if I didn't have to deal with too much attitude in trying to get
a table in restaurants , etc, which can sometimes happen
4 )Basically sanitary (safe drinking water/street food a plus)
5) I would like to stay all-inclusive, though I typically only eat
breakfast at my resort - I know that sounds stupid, but it's a comfort
thing - I feel better knowing that no matter what, I won't starve
(like if I lose my wallet or my credit card stops working or whatever
- I've never traveled alone before - grant me my stupid security
blanket, please! )
6) Is there ANY way to avoid the dreaded "single supplement"?
Not counting spending money, etc, for airfare/hotel I'd like to keep
the trip around $1500 or less. I know I can go to PV for around $900
easily - but I'm completely open as to where to go.
Hoping someone can point something interesting my way -
