...I've never stayed at those hotels 'hblu', so I can't comment. But
I do have a couple low cost suggestions for a short stay...
My wife and I have stayed at both of these hotels on two different
occasions:
The Hotel Vermont (in Ipanema)
21 (21) 522-0057
in the heart of the Ipanema district, about two short blocks from
Ipanema beach - very nice beach, for being in the city
The Copacabana Sol Hotel (in Copacabana)
http://www.copacabanasolhotel.com.br/
in the center of the Copacabana district, about four blocks from
Copacabana beach - the beach is very popular, but filthy in my opinion
- but if you don't go in the water, I guess it's ok. Also... this one
would be a little closer to the cruise ships... but, too far to
walk... you would definitely take a cab from either location for about
the same price. This hotel may be a little nicer than the Vermont,
but really, both are about the same.
Both are simple, decent hotels. The rooms are small with 80's
furnishings, but they are clean, we didn't see a big cockroaches or
anything, and they are in "safe" neighborhoods (of course, in
Rio...this is a relative term). I believe both go for around R$150 a
night (about US$52 today) and have continental breakfast. When you
call, be sure and ask about any additional taxes or fees, to get the
final full price.
