Location is more important than price. Try to stay in
the port in Manaus, Ipanema in Rio, Barra in Salvador.

I have travelled three times on a Varig AirPass so, yes. Bear
in mind that you will only have 3 weeks to complete it.

>(or maybe two-day) Amazon trip?

Three-day/Two night. There are numerous agencies offering
trips; take the one furthest into the forest. I went with Amazonas Indio
Turismo and it took us 5 hrs to reach our huts (4hr bus and 1 hr
boat).

Best advice is to learn as much Portuguese as you can.

There is a favela tour mentioned in the Brazil handbook; mind you
if you go to Salvador, you may not need a special tour. Try to go to
a real candomble ceremony.

Check out my web site for pix.
