Spent time in Merida Venezuela last June w/family. These comments are
for then, things may have changed by now, I don't know.
1) Wonderful hotel on Avenida los Proceres: Hotel Serrano. I would
describe it as 4-star with 2-3 star prices, about $35 per night for 3 of
us. New, clean place with wonderful room (best A/C I've seen, with
remote control!), swimming pool, great restaurant and lounge. Staff
very helpful (but little or no Ingles), they do laundry. Free internet
access in lobby.
2) Taxis abound in Merida, only $1.00 per trip, get the newer smaller
air-conditioned cabs. (I think it's because they have the cheapest
gasoline on the planet, 30-cents per gallon last June). Lots of
internet cafes in downtown areas. Best colorful meals: go the the base
of the Teleferique, to the Arrassari Tours office/restaurant.
"Executive" lunches there can't be beat!!
3) Car rental deals are pretty good at/near airport. We rented for
4-days and went UP-UP into Andes, over 14,000 feet. Great vehicle, I
think it was a Ford Fiesta, A/C 5-speed good brakes.
4) Take in the small Chorros de Milla Park Zoo in Merida, lots of birds,
good walking up to a little waterfall, and even some condors, recovering
from injuries.
Enjoy your trip.
