I'm really sad to hear these reports from everyone. I stayed in La Ceiba
for about 3 weeks in 1989 after having driven all the way from No Ca.
While my male friend stayed on Roatan and I flew back and forth to La
Ceiba (that's an interesting aside) I found everyone really sweet and
helpful. I wandered the streets alone almost all the time even going to
a night movie where it seemed there were mostly young men. No one ever
bothered me, but I always kept my ears and eyes open. It def. had a
roughness to the town that I found exciting, but I never feared for
myself. Maybe I had gotten used to this type of travel after a few
months. Nevertheless, I loved the town. Left my car full of all
possessions parked behind my hotel with no one bothering it at all. I
let everyone know in the hotel I was leaving it there. Also, a great
place to make change was at the supermarket. They actually took me into
the back office while they were counting piles of money and made change
for me at a really high rate. Way better than the banks. Who knew?
It rained a lot those 3 weeks and I spent a lot of time in the small
hotel lobby writing. Many people spoke Spanish as well as a more carib
mixture of english/spanish. There is a lot of commerce between Louisiana
and Honduras and boats go back and forth. I never knew that. So, there
are a lot of blacks living there and it's much more caribbean in flavor
than Latin. Honestly, I thought it was a great little place and very
interesting. What's happened in the last 15 years to make it seem unsafe?
