It depends on the vehicle, your final destination, and whether or not
you are going one way or round trip, and how long you will be staying
in country. We drove Seattle to Honduras on a one way move this past
winter. Our 1996 Isuzu box van (definitely a saleable item in both
mexico and Guatemala)and Argosy travel trailer were listed on our
Mexican manifest of goods transported through Mexico. We paid no
vehicle deposit fees to transit Mexico and were given a 12 day transit
permit on the manifest. We had the same deal transiting Guatemala - no
deposits or fees since they used the Mexican manifest to issue their
own manifest. We only had to pay impuesto (tax) on the vehicles at the
Honduran border because we were making a one way trip into the country
(pasport stamped by the Honduran consulate in SF indicating our
residency visa application numbers).
