Subject: Re: Chilean "Airport Tax" - for an Aussie Posted on: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 14:34:57 EST

greetings,
the departure tax will be in the price of the airticket and any travel agent
will confirm the price (I think US$18) BUT what is not in your ticket is
the US$30
that Australians have to pay. It is called a Reciprocal Tax and apparently
imposed on citizens of
those countries who impose a similar tax on chilenos. It is valid for 90
days even if you leave the country and re enter within the 90 days. A ticket
(talón) is stapled to your passport.
In Santiago airport the payment booth is against the left hand wall, about
25m before the "passport stampers". Don't lose this talón.
There are about 5 countries that have to pay.
That is how it was explained to me. My wife is from Oz and paid it in both
año 2000 and 2003.
I have dual nationality but used my British passport and did not have to
pay.
cheers, philip, Tasmania
