Agreed. I like the Caribbean also, but Cancun itself is a real mess, and PDC
not much better. The whole coast is Disneylandlike.
PV is "closer" to Mex than the goverment created Cancun. Still, I'll probably
pop down to Cancun and south to Tulum a few more times.
My $459 price mentioned was USD. I hadn't realized the $1500 mentioned was Can
dollars.
As for "...hitchhiking down and crashing with some chick..." Been there, done
that.
I'm older now. Got money, but less time.
I'm looking at price R/T airfare. Best air you usually can get is maybe $200.
So at $459 am looking at $259 All inclusive 7 days. Which IS (at $74 USD/day
for TWO persons)) not much more more than we'd probably pay to just fly and
stay at an old town PV hotel and then eat and drink. Course I could just drink
water and eat beans (been there, done that too), but probably won't.
So your $1500 Can Dollars translates to $1098 USD (today). The airfare part of
that depends on where you are coming from.
But getting back to the original problem of plumbing, hot water, etc. I still
stand by my "this is Mex/grain of salt" quote.
Mexico has fantastic craftsmen when it comes to trinkets and artifact type
cultural things. The markets are filled with stuff. But when it comes to
construction there is always a lot to be desired. And then fixing the less than
stellar construction is even worse.
The facades of hotels/fancy houses may be exemplary and beautiful, but behind
those facades lurk pipes, wires, conduit, A/C that is "out of sight, out of
mind" and prone to be jury rigged and something that would never have been
passed in the US.
The best can be said is that when on vacation in Cancun, why do you need/want
to spend much time in your hotel room anyway. It is all about getting outside.
The truth is, in Mexico, you DO NOT always get what you pay for.
Have fun.
