I used Ticketbus offices in Oaxaca and San Cristobal to purchase my bus
tickets. They had the same computer screens you find in bus terminals,
showing you available seating, and accepted credit cards. They saved me
trips to the terminals and worked perfectly. The only thing is Ticketbus
only sells luxury bus lines so you miss out on 2nd class schedules, if you
need them. I didn't see any reason to purchase tickets in advance or on the
internet.

And while we're at it, Richard, how do we avoid night bus travel in Chiapas
as you so strongly recommend? Long distance busses out of Oaxaca and
Palenque where all overnights, with no possibilities of seeing the
countryside and seemingly risking hold-ups. I have to say I travelled
through two nights and slept without a care in the world.
