Spent four days and nights there a couple of years ago at an oceanfront
hotel in Cancun. Everyday somebody at or within earshot of the hotel beach
drowned. Only saw black flags, and the lifeguard dissapeared after 4 in the
afternoon. I went in swimming a couple of times and the undertow was strong
enough to knock me off my feet. It would have been dangerous for me if I
had panicked.
The other weird thing that I noticed was that there were places on the beach
where I could see waves forming as the water rushed back out to sea. These
outgoing waves mixed with the incoming waves creating localized regions a
few feet from shore where the water got very deep and violent. I saw a few
unwary travellers get stuck in these areas and require rescue. In fact I
had to rescue my wife.
Unless you a strong, in good shape, and familiar with ocean swimming, I
suggest that you don't swim in the ocean off the coast of Cancun. Another
thing that I suggest is that you don't get your hair done in cornrows
either. Both could be equally fatal.
