Right now the train takes you only to Chillan, that's only 400 Km south of
Santiago. Service to Temuco will resume in November with new wagons. It
doesn't go to Puerto Montt anymore !! Prices Santiago-Temuco vary from
US$12 (seat) to US$67 (2 double beds "apartment"). More info @

If you want to go to the Lake District (Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas) the
fastest way is to take a bus. For example, Tur Bus (http://www.turbus.com/)
prices vary from US$16 (seat) to US$48 (bed) one way.
May be the best plan is to go by bus to Puerto Varas and there rent a car.
There are several good hotels like the Colonos del Sur
(http://www.colonosdelsur.cl/) or Los Alerces
(http://www.cabanaslosalerces.cl/). From Puerto Varas you can take a tour
to the argentine side (Bariloche) and visit Puerto Montt, Frutillar, Ralun,
Puyehue.
If at the end you have a couple of days, the city of Valdivia is worth a
visit (192 km north of Puerto Varas). Villarrica and Pucon are also worth a
visit but they are 420 Km north of Puerto Varas.
If you "must" visit the fjords, you can take a ship in Puerto Montt that
goes to Puerto Chacabuco. It's a 24h trip and costs around US$100 o/w pp in
a double cabin with bathroom. It's NOT a cruise but may be you'll enjoy the
view. Of course, the trip back to Puerto Montt is also 24hrs... may be you
should take a plane from Coyahique to Santiago instead. More info :

Other ships :
Transmarchilay http://www.tmc.cl/ Makes the connection from Puerto Montt to
Chaiten (11 hours trip)
Aysen Express http://www.hotelsa.cl/ (San Rafael glacier, 3 days/2 nights
US$570)
Catamaranes del Sur http://www.catamaranesdelsur.cl/ Puerto Montt-Chaiten, 4
hours / San Rafael glacier ???
Good luck !!
Christian.
