San Ignacio, Belize, is a wonderful place and you can get to the border
from there by bus or, more conveniently, in a shared taxi. Once at the
border and through Belizian immigration, walk across the bridge into GT.
Buses run regularly to Flores and pass the turn to Tikal. If you get off
at the turn-off you'll easily stop a bus bound for Tikal.
Don't limit yourself just with timetabled buses as there are also
smaller minibuses that run more frequently, departing when full. Ask
around to find where they leave from.
A tour to Tikal from San Ignacio might make sense if you're wanting to
make it easy.
Even better is to go to Flores, and backtrack a little to Tikal as it's
an amazing city and tours from there are plentiful. Even the regular
buses from Flores to Tikal are easy to negotiate. Definitely, the
easiest way to have a full day in Tikal is to get there from Flores.
On your return, you can easily leave the tour at the turn-off and head
back to the border with is open very late at night.
The border is way easy: efficient in Belize and non-existent in
Guatemala. Exchange rates there from the touts on the street was good.
I really don't remember any paperwork though there may have been a
reasonable fee.
How's that?
