I'm looking at the possibility at driving a car into Mexico and as far
south as I can. I understand that there is no road on the Pan-American
Highway connecting Panama and Columbia. I have read most of the
articles related to this subject and still have a few questions.
First, economically how expensive is it? I am interested mostly in gas
prices, toll road fees (if you don't take them, how long would it
take)? Required insurance fees, boarder crossing fees. I understand
that it is probably cheaper to fly, but I'd like to see the countries
in-between.
Second, are there any updated solutions to bridging the Darien Gap?
Can I leave a car in Panama for like 2 months while I take a flight
from Panama to Columbia and rent a car in Columbia? How expensive is
this flight, what other non-car options are there? I understand there
is a USD$300 fee to pay S. American customers only $200 of which is
refundable. Is this still true?
Third, if I wanted to visit Cuba and fly from Cancun, could I? Can I
leave a car safely in Cancun for a week or two (granted the car would
probably not be expensive, and hardly worth steeling [at least from a
middle class American's point of view]).
