Nonetheless, many people have done it, and still do. We have. If one
intends to spend much time touring South America, especially if
camping, it is far cheaper to have a vehicle shipped from Panama to
Colombia rather than paying for all transportation once in South
America. Nicer, too.

BTW, another good read is "Driving to Heaven" by Derek Stansfield. He
had a camper van shipped from the UK, drove it through North and South
America, then shipped it back. The "South American Handbook" by Ben
Box is also a great resource. Both are available from Amazon.UK.
