While the state department will tell you otherwise, Honduras can be a
very safe country to visit if you use some common sense. Essentially
treat it as you would any large city in the United States - don't walk
dark streeets alone at night, don't flash cash, don't wear showy jewelry.

As for Copan, the place is great! It is also about the safest city in
Honduras I've seen. Honestly you could do the three things I described
and likely still not get in any trouble.

Some good Copan websites - http://www.copanhonduras.org/ and
http://www.copanruinas.com/

Nicest place to stay - http://www.haciendasanlucas.com/
Best deal in Copan (and frankly in all of Honduras) -
http://www.todomundo.com/iguanaazul/index.html

I stay at Iguana Azul and love it - clean, comfortable and at $11 a
night for a private room, it's a steal!

The owner of Iguana Azul, Howard, can direct you to local places to eat
that are very good and affordable.

To get to Copan, I suggest the Hedman Alas bus line from either San
Pedro Sula or Guatamala. Details at:
http://www.copanhonduras.org/hedman/index.htm

Entry into the park is $25 (including the tunnels) and a guide is
another $20 (money very well spent IMHO).

Have a great time, Honduras is a beautiful country and the people are
possibly the friendliest in Latin America.
