I lived in Panama three years, have been to Costa Rica three times and
Belize once, and I never really had a problem with insects until this last
trip to Belize (Hopkins Village). And, it wasn't with mosquitoes--it was
flies! The last night we were there I kept getting bit while we were eating
at an outside patio type restaurant. If that had been the end of it, I
wouldn't have minded. But, after returning home to the States, the bites
would never heal and kept oozing serum. In short, they were botflies--and
they are horribly painful as they develop in your body, and just plain gross
to think about. The one on my ankle was chewing on what must have been a
nerve, because I would nearly black out with pain. It took a month or two
to get the larvae out, and I've got a couple of scars from the ordeal. I
had three bites in all. Moral of the story: use plenty of insect repellant.
And, no, that experience will not deter me from going on further adventures!
