Re: Car Travel from US to Mexico, C. America, and Beyond Posted on: Thu, 25 Dec 2003 11:17:58 -0500

We took a VW van from West Virginia all the way to Ushuaia in Tierra
del Fuego along with 5 other friends in 2 other vans in 2000-2001. It
was a 9 month trip of 29,000 miles. Having done this same trip twice
before, I decided to ship from Miami to Venezuela and on the way home
from Ecuador to Charleston, South Carolina which cost about $1000. You
can ship in a container (more expensive) or roll-on roll-off less
expensive but then you have to worry about anything in your vehicle
being stolen since it won't be locked up moving onboard and off.

If I were driving through Central America on the way to South America,
I would ship from Panama to Ecuador instead of Colombia. From
Colombia, the only safe routes for non-latins is over to Venezuela and
the only route out of Venezuela to the rest of South America is via
the Amazon but from Ecuador, you can then go south to the rest of the
continent. We went south from Venezuela into Brasil and then shipped
down the Amazon and drove the rest of the way. You can follow our trip
at willandlarry.com where there is a 2,000 page diary plus 700 photo
pages comprising a collection of 3,500 photos of the trip day by day.
When finished, the site will have 1000 photo pages.

Any questions, e-mail me. Larry
