We stayed in Angangueo last March at Casa Huéspedes El Paso de la Monarca -
possibly the cheapest option at 130 Pesos. The lady who runs the hotel was very
friendly and informative. There are other more expensive places. We thought that
Angangeuo was a really nice small town - very welcoming. The butterfly sanctuary
itself is up the hill in El Rosario. It is possible to walk but much better to
arrange transport. There were rumours of public transport but we couldn't find
it and ended up in a 4 wheel drive with a Mexican family. This cost us 50 pesos
each but was open to negotiation - maybe you will be able to get this cheaper.
If you are on a tight budget - get a ride up early in the morning and then walk
back down.
The sanctuary itself must rate as one of the most spectacular natural sites you
will ever see - literally millions of butterflies. Certainly not to be missed.
We only spent the one day there - but if you have time I would probably
recommend going back the next morning. You would still have plenty of time to
get to Morelia.
Transport from Mexico City is from Terminal Pontiente (easy to get to by metro)
- last year there were about 5 direct services per day - many more if you change
at Zitácuaro. Cost was 95 pesos each and the journey took about 4.5 hours.
There is good transportation from Zitácuaro to Morelia and from there to the
rest of Michoacan. One point to note about Morelia is that there is now a brand
new bus terminal right on the outskirts of town near the football stadium. If
you are arriving from the East make sure that you get off at the closest point
to the centre (where everyone else gets off!) - otherwise you are in for an
expensive taxi ride back to town. That apart Morelia is a beautiful city.
Good luck
Hava a good trip
