My daughter and I did a 3 week trip to Mexico last year. We flew into
DF and then headed to the Pacific coast. Our first stop was Acapulco.
A 4.5 hour bus ride; amazing change in vegetation.
Acapulco is very Mexican...a week spot for those who live in DF. Many
inexpensive hotels $15-$20 near the Zocalo area down from the cliff
divers. Many inexpensive places to eat also. And a large variety of
beaches to visit.
Another 4 hour trip will bring you to Zihuatanejo. A little quieter.
No as many cheap hotels, but pleasant. (Personally, I think you will
want to avoid its sister city, Ixtapa.)
On the return from Acapulco we stopped for a couple of hours in an old
silver mining town whose name escapes. We then spent the night in
another town, not far from DF, known for its large number of Spanish
language schools.
