You want to stay in the Jardins - NOT the Centro. Try Blair House
blairhouse@zeronet.co.br (about $30/night) on Alameda Franca 1645. Bit
noisy, but ask for a room at the top and you should be OK. If you don't
like it, there is a colonial pensao next to it which is most definitely
quiet.
