A great deal depends on how you want to live. I know ex-pats who get by
and less than $1000 a month and others who require $3000+ a month.
Do you insist on American brand food or will the local version suffice
(personally I like Natura products better than many US labels). You can
live really cheap if you survive on rice and beans, but you want Diet
Coke with Lime? prepare to start forking over dinero.
Will you want a live-in domestic or someone to come by everyday or
no-one helping at all? A live-in costs less in actual salary but your
paying for food, lodging, utilities, etc. Regardless, just budget $100 a
week. Another $50 if you want a fulltime yardman/security person
(assuming the two are a couple)
Essentially living in Honduras is not immensley cheaper than your
lifestyle in the USA... you'll save on labor cost but spend more on
goods. Stuff doesn't last as long and repair work is a bad joke.
A good example... a friend wanted US style television but no cable ran
near where he lives. He ended up buying a DirecTV system. Here in the
states they just about give away such systems, he paid more than $600
for his rather basic setup. He got it installed, including running the
coax for 200 lemps (roughly $12).
I love Honduras and look forward to moving there to be close to my
family again. However I know that the reason to move there is not
because it is cheap. To do so almost insures you will not be happy.
Hope that helps you.
