Hi, let me tell you some things about your travel to Chile.

The most important city and its respectives interesting places from
north to south are (only for reference):

2.000 km north of santiago
Arica - Chungara Lake (over 4.000 meter over sea level)

1.850 km north of santiago
Iquique

1.350 km north of santiago
Antofagasta - San Pedro de Atacama (it is a must) ("the moon valley")

800 km north of santiago
Copiapo

500 km north of santiago
La Serena (Valle del Elqui)

120 km north of santiago
Valparaíso and Viña del Mar
Very turinstic zone

Santiago

Concepción
500 km south of santiago

700 km south of santiago
Temuco - Pucón - Villarica - terms - lakes zones - 7 lakes route - ski

900 km south of santiago
Osorno - the lake zones - ski

1.000 km south of santiago
Puerto Montt
Lake zone - catamaran to glaciar

3.000 km. (by plain or by bus through Argentina)
Punta Arenas - Puerto Natales - Torres del Paine (it is a must) -
glaciar

in the page www.turbus.cl you can find price for buses from anuwhere
to anywhere. Go to pasajes (tickets) and select the origen and
destiny.

Beaware that all the travel are from any city of the north to santiago
and then santiago to the south. There are not buses from a city of the
north to som city to the south, always the hub is santiago.

other information is USD 1 = $ 650 chilean pesos.

Travel by bus in Chile is very safe and buses mainly are on time. The
confortable attribute of every travel depend on which class of seat
have you, in chile we use, normal, semi cama (almost bed), and salon
cama (bed seat) with 3 seat per row.

In the north the more attractive are:

Chungara Lake, but it is so height.
San Pedro de Atacama and the desert if you do not know
Valle del Elqui
Valparaíso great city and Viña del Mar most turistic city for
chileans.

Lake zone, 7 lakes route, Torres del Paine

One nice option is go up to Puerto Montt and then go to Bariloche
Argentina (through Osorno) and then to argentinean patagonia (Calafate
is a must and some other place in the patagonia) and then go back to
Chile to go Torres del Paine and Punta Arenas.

Torres del Paine in winter is almost imposible because is so cold and
noone is going there in that months. I am almost sure that all the
shelters are closed in winter. Could be in November. The rest of south
up to Puerto Montt in winter is cold but ok, less cold than New Yort
or any city of north of europe.

Well, that is all I can support you.
