We live in Mexico half the year, travel extensively there and in
central america and never get sick. I do second the recommendation to
get Hep A shots, it's a good preventative here in the US as well.

To give your natural flora and fauna a fighting chance to adjust to
the new ones, start taking acidophilus pills 2 weeks before you leave
and continue taking them for 2 weeks after you return. I take them
daily year around, it builds up the good bugs in your stomach and
reduces the culture shock inside.
