I've been going to Ambergris Caye since the early 1990s, and I wrote the only
travel guidebook to the island (San Pedro Cool, available from Amazon.com).
I think it's a great place -- friendly, a good bit to do but not too much;
discovered, but not completely; mostly sand streets, no buildings over three
stories, some very good restaurants, lots of good hotels and condotels in all
price ranges, good diving, excellent snorkeling (but mostly not from shore);
not too expensive; and you can drink the water. Beaches are pretty to look at
but not too great for swimming, though you can swim in areas where the seagrass
has been removed.
As Mike says, San Pedro is not particularly gay-friendly, but neither should
you have any problems there. Belizeans take people one by one. There are no
gay bars or strictly gay resorts (there was one a few years ago, but it closed,
for reasons unrelated to its targeted guest market).
Coral Bay Villas are nice, though they don't have a pool. I'd say also look at
places like Banana Beach, Xanadu, The Palms and Belizean Shores (on North
Ambergris, more remote).

<< I'm posting this to a few different groups (not x-posting though)
My partner and I are considering a 2 week trip to *somewhere* in the
Caribbean, and Ambergris Caye in Belize is winning.
Have any of you ever vacationed on Ambergris Caye, or Belize in general? We
were in Belize City once for about 10 hours, but that's hardly enough to
answer all our questions or even allow us to know all there is to know about
the area.
We are considering the Coral Bay Villas. If any of you have any information
specifically about this place, or can recommend another, it'd be greatly
appreciated.
Also, we are a gay couple, so if you know of any gay friendly or
specifically non gay friendly areas in Belize, that information would be
appreciated too. We aren't looking for a gay resort or anything like that.
Just safety and a relaxing vacation.
Thanx in advance for any help.
