You might stop at Vallodolid (spelling?) it makes a nice stop en route
to Chichen Itza. There are also lesser known Mayan sites near Merida.
If you have time, you might want to book a hotel in Playa del Carmen for
a few days. It makes a good starting base for trips to Cozumel,
Xel-ha, Xcaret, Tulum and Cobas. At Cozumel you can rent a jeep and a
guide who will take you off road to less spectacular but equally
interesting Mayan ruins. Cozumel was a pilgrimage point to the Mother
Goddess. Playa del Carmen was a Mayan stopping point for pilgrims en
route to Cozumel. The Mayan name is Xaman-ha. In town you can find
reminders of the older Xaman-ha, a wall here a statue there. There's a
beautiful tropical bird sanctuary in the south end of town that bears
the old name of Xaman-ha.
