Generally, a poor option is "americano" as it presumes the person will know
which of the two dozen or so American countries you are from. Best is
"norteamericano" which is well understood to be synonymous with persons of
the USA. "Estadounidense" is not as commonly used, and can be confused with
the United Mexican States or those of Brazil.

Worst possible is "soy gringo" as many use the term as a pejoritive, and it
may be considered as a rude attempt at humor or, even, an insult to Latinos.
