Ya da ya da ya da.

Your numbers are too high on insurance, too low on gas, and you left out
tolls on Mexico's rather expensive toll roads. People who do it regularly
tell me they can drive from Matamoros to Playa del Carmen in two and a half
days. It takes me longer but I do a lot of sight seeing along the way. In my
estimation 3 weeks is a rather short period of time for a driving trip that
far south into Mexico. While cost is obviously a factor for most of us there
are several other things to consider when choosing your mode of
transportation. I've flown and driven to the Yucatan--when I have the time I
much prefer driving--there's a lot to see between here and there. Traveling
on the cheap Mexico's excellent bus system is another choice to consider.
