I did this last year in the december.
The large bus left Santiago at 9:00 and arrived in Temuco at 18:00.
There were 2 coffee stops (5 minutes) and at the station of the bus company
we stopped about 15 minutes (with a big supermarket
next door).

I very much enjoyed Pucon (the next day we went to Pucon), the outdoor
activities were great.
I still regret not going to the top of vulcano because the second day it was
rainly.
Puton to Puerto Montt is 12:30- 18:45 with Bus Jac. Bring a lot of books to
read in the bus ;-)

Imho, Puerto Montt and Chiloe are overrated. We visited two towns on Chiloe,
but spend a lot of time in the bus.
But I like outdoor activities much more as visiting towns and looking at
houses. The markets were getting rebuild and start to look more like small
shops.
