We have been to Costa Rica numerous times over the past 30+ years and
have tent-camped on virtually all those trips. We always carry our own
camping gear; buying such gear for only 3 nights doesn't sound very
frugal unless you have later uses for it. But very light solo bivy
tents that are rain- and bug-free are available if you want to invest
in one. You are going during the dry season, but at the very minimum,
I'd suggest a light tarp (like a space blanket) with nylon parachute
cord and thin spike aluminum stakes to keep it in place on the beaches
where there aren't handy trees. Additional comfort costs $$.
We always found Costa Rica to be very safe (comparatively) and have
never had a problem there. Most of our beach camping was on the Nicoya
Peninsula, however. Always check with trustworthy local sources for
information on where to camp, and if there have been any problems
locally. The weather can get quite rainy in the mountains, and very
hot, humid and jungle-like in the Golfito area (the inland side of the
Osa Peninsula) as well as all along the Caribbean coast. But in
February, it's a welcome change if you are from colder climes ;-).
