Guanajuato is one of my favorite towns in Mexico. You can always hang
out in the central square (I forget the name). The university has
various concerts and events, attend those. There are museums, but as the
other poster said, they are not all that great, but worth seeing if you
are in town.
One day trip is Dolores Hildalgo, lots of history and pottery, could do
that in an afternoon. San Miguel de Allende is a logical all-day trip,
as is Queretero, which has great museums. Another weekend getaway would
be Guadalajara. Morelia and Micheoacan are also possible weekend trips.
Mexico City is a potential weekend trip, but be careful about crime
problems and taxi robberies.
The town of Cata is very close to Guanajato, go to the church and look
at the exvotos. (Personal thank you notes to God). Then you will
understand better the faith of the Mexicans. Good Spanish practice also.
The closest beaches are probably Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, and the
various beaches in between, like Melaque and Barra de Navida. These are
7 to 10 hours away, probably change buses in Guadalajara. If you plan a
weekend getaway, buy your bus tickets a few days before.
It may be cheaper to fly to Mexico City than to Leon, which is very
close to Guanajato. From Mexico City airport buy a taxi ticket at the
taxi window, take an official taxi from the offical taxi station to the
Norte bus terminal. From there you should be able to get a first class
bus to Guanajuato. (ETN is a great luxury line).
Have fun.
