They raised it to just under $50. One thing you should note is that the
airport is not actually in Caracas. Caracas is about a 25 minute taxi ride
away (if there's no traffic). The name of the city where the airport is
called Maraquita, I think. So while it's more safe than Caracas proper, I
don't doubt that the taxis could be sketchy. The "taxi" La Parada sent for
me was this truck without papers to operate in the airport area. We (myself
and others they were picking up) had to walk all the way out of the airport
to the "public" part of the street.
Also, the hotel people sent to pick you up will try and sell you Bolivares.
Make sure you know what the going rate is. All in all, I would say that if
you feel comfortable enough with your Spanish so as not to feel totally
helpless, if you sign on with one of the places mentioned on the web site
you should be fine. Maybe double check with the hotel as to who will be
picking you up, what kind of vehicle, etc, and you can always ask the person
at the airport for ID, etc. If you plan properly and act prudently there's
nothing to get paranoid about.
