This question comes up here more frequently than you would think. I
remember a group based in Mexico planning this trip, they had a good web
site. Go to Google, click on groups, and then search for words like
"driving north south america". I found some interesting stuff on the
first page of results.

I assume that you are aware of the Darien Gap, a section of Panama with
no road. Aside from being more or less impassible, the Darien Gap is a
no-go zone due to guerrillas, etc. Even the government does not go
there. You should also research security issues, especially in Columbia,
where overland travel is not recommended due to kidnapping of foreigners.
