My research shows that flying's probably a better option. Doesn't look
like it costs a huge amount more and the time savings look dramatic.

Yes - I should clarify. This is primarily a trip to Belize - We're
spending two weeks out on the Cays. However, we were able to get from
Vancouver to Guatemala City on points, and as we also wanted to spend a
day in Tikal we thought we could kill two birds with one stone by
travelling to Belize via Guatemala. So you can consider this a "Trip
to Belize with a side trip to Tikal." :)
