There is a "road" to other towns in the area. Is more like wide sidewalk
and the motorcycles and 3 wheel cycle taxis use the road. There are both
luxury lodges and non-luxury lodges within 50 miles of Iquitos on the
Amazon. Explorama has both. Iquitos is not a major Malaria area, but there
is some. Take the medicines for it, as you do not want Malaria. My uncle
suffered from it (WW-II, South Pacific) and was not nice. Is more an oil
town than a tourist town. Get the local free newsheet in English and there
are listings to what to do in town and the area. Even a guy who will guide
you for Peacock bass fishing for about $50 / day. Good price.
