Guanajato is a great colonial city, but many hours from the coast.
Alamos is at least an hour from the coast, probably more.
I can't think of a colonial city near the west coast.
I worry about security also, but I think that if you stay away from the
border cities and Mexico city, I don't think it is a major concern.
