Re: Where is this place in W. Mexico? Posted on: Fri, 2 Dec 2005 16:18:39 +0000 (UTC)

Puerto La Escondida is known as a surfer's paradise but is not all that
touristy. Has small, cheap hotels or a cabin on the beach. Interesting
restaurants and artisans market. Few Americans there unless they are
surfers. The few tourists are usually European. This place is
accessible from Oaxaca (which is also cool) and if you rent a car you
not only get a gorgeous drive over the mountains to the coast but you
can access Huatulco where you can take a snorkeling tour. Also, from La
Escondida you can take a horseback ride up into the mountains.

On the Gulf side a great place is Veracruz. Mesican tourists, very few
Americans or Europeans. Is easily accessed by bus from Mexico City,
possibly even from the airport, at least to Puebla, which is a colonial
city, also worth a look. From Veracruz you can easily get to cool
places like Catemaco and La Antigua where Hernan Cortez spent some
time. See where he tied his ships up. It/s cool.

Inland, in my opinion, the best kept secret in all of Mexico is the
Sierra Gorda (Fat Mountain) region near Queretarro. A good plan is to
take bus from Mexico City Airport 2 hours to Queretaro (which also has
a nice centro) and from there rent a car and head back toward Mexico
City to Tequisquiapan (known for it's spas and thermals) and then head
into the mountains to Bernal. Ecologically very cool with at least 7
distinct ecological zones including a cloud forest at the top. There
are some ruins in that area too. Bernal has an artisans market and is a
fun small town, but you probably will not see any foreign tourists.

There are so many great places in Mexico. Just pick any of the
suggestions you have had so far and you will have a great time.
