But that requires a one-way flight within the US, which might be expensive.

In fact, if you can change your tickets in this way, there are two other
options to consider. First, see if you can get a return ticket *from your
starting point to San Francisco*, but with a *stopover* in New York in
one direction. So you would have three flying days, Madrid - New York,
New York - San Francisco, San Francisco - Madrid. (There might be some
changes of plane in there as well.) You would rent a car in San Francisco
and make a loop to the different western points. Instead of San Francisco
you could also use Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, etc.

A second choice is to get an open-jaw ticket *from your starting point*,
again *with a stopover in New York*, and with the open jaw between San
Francisco and Las Vegas (or Phoenix). Then you rent a car in one of
those cities and return it in the other, paying extra for doing so.

In my original response I assumed that the ticket to New York was one
that could not be changed. If that's not the case, it very likely will
pay to use one of these options instead.
